Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- Have experience of working in design teams and communicating effectively within the team;
- Be capable of demonstrating process selection based on sound scientific and engineering data and arguments;
- Have experience of project organisation and management;
- Be aware of the financial, environmental, sustainability and other aspects associated with a major design project;
- Have acquired the necessary skills to enable them to conduct a project with a significant degree of engineering competence;
- Be capable of disseminating their findings in written and verbal form.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have a deeper knowledge of:
- Principles, analysis and design of complex processes (e.g. mass and energy balances, process integration, chemical reactions, unit operations, complex physical interactions, combustion and recycles).
- Methodologies for design of process equipment.
- Environmental, safety and sustainability issues.
- Project management, cost and investment analysis.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have the following skills:
- Analysis and design of industrial process plants.
- Use of spreadsheets (Excel) and appropriate software (e.g. HYSYS and MATLAB) to solve mass/energy balances and process modelling.
- Process equipment design calculations.
- Cost analysis and investment appraisal.
- Project management, team work and decision making.
- Literature review.
- Preparation of project plan, identification of milestones and targets.
- Conducting project meetings.
- Verbal presentation and written report preparation.


Syllabus

Design Project
Students will work together in a group to design a chemical process plant or other industrial operation. Each project will be supervised by a member of academic staff who will act as project supervisor and will be responsible for the assessment of that project. Students will meet with the supervisor on a weekly basis to ensure good progress within the project. In addition, a number of academic staff will be available to provide technical consultancy to groups of students in semester 1 and individual designs in semester 2. They will also attend a series of lectures and seminars dealing with relevant aspects of the planning, design and evaluation of the project and ethical issues. Students will be responsible for the organisation and delivery of relevant aspects required in the project, as prescribed. Each group will be required to produce a project plan detailing the planning and execution of the project, an interim report (part 1) at the end of semester 1, covering basic aspects, relevant literature in the field (e.g. raw materials/products, process route evaluation and selection, SHE, project management and mass and energy balances and process integration), and a final report (part 2) at the end of semester 2, covering process control/P&I diagram, economic evaluation, plant layout, HAZOP and plant commissioning aspects of the project. Each individual student will be required to produce a plant equipment design report in semester 2 covering detailed technical design, engineering drawings, control and cost estimation of a selected plant item(s). This element of the module is compulsory for passing the module. Students will also be required to make verbal presentations on their equipment design findings at the end of the project in semester 2.

- Submission of a project plan (semester 1)
- Feedback on process related calculations (e.g. mass/energy balances and equipment design) in weekly meetings with technical consultants
- Part 1 report (semester 1)
- Plant equipment design report (semester 2)
- Verbal presentation (semester 2)
- Extent of participation and response to questions asked in weekly tutorials with supervisors
- Attendance in lecture classes and tutorials.
