Module summary

This module will examine recent advances in materials science and engineering, with applications in areas such as energy materials, biomaterials and nanomaterials.

Objectives

The objective is to understand and appreciate some of the recent advances in materials science and engineering.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles to the solution of complex problems. Some of the knowledge will be at the forefront of the particular subject of study.
2. Select and critically evaluate technical literature and other sources of information to solve complex problems.
3. Identify and analyse ethical concerns and make reasoned ethical choices informed by professional codes of conduct.
4. Communicate effectively on complex engineering matters with technical and non-technical audiences.
5. Plan and record self-learning and development as the foundation for lifelong learning/CPD.

Skills outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
- Technical skills
- Communication
- Reflection

Syllabus

This module will comprise specific workshops on different research-led topics. As a group the cohort will look at the underpinning science and engineering behind a topic, listen and ask questions to an expert in the area, and reflect on their understanding and development of this within the context of materials science and engineering.
