Objectives
At the end of the module, students will be able to identify, discuss and analyse the technological, economic and policy factors that will govern the future of the nuclear industry, both in the UK and overseas.Learning outcomes
Students will develop the ability to conduct analyses of potential future pathways for the nuclear industry, encompassing technological, economic and policy factors and to some extent their interplay.
Skills outcomes
Ability to apply nuclear engineering knowledge gained elsewhere in the curriculum to open-ended and interdisciplinary issues in the future of nuclear power.
Syllabus
- Economic, political and public acceptance of the future of nuclear power
- Advanced fuel cycles and reactors (Gen-IV reactors, thorium fuel cycle, non-PUREX processing)
- Future technologies such as fusion
- Other topics relevant to the future of the UK and to a lesser extent the international nuclear industry, such as the future nuclear enterprise.
