Objectives
To provide students with the knowledge and skills required for efficient utilisation and management of energy services in industrial and commercial applications.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject, being able to:
- Select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model complex problems, discussing the limitations of the techniques employed. (Contributes to AHEP4 outcome M3)
- Understand the role of energy management and conservation.
- Apply the essential theories and methodologies for energy auditing, analysis and economic evaluation. (Contributes to AHEP4 outcome M1)
- Design and conduct an energy utilization program.
- Be equipped with the knowledge and skills for carbon footprint reduction.
- Have a detailed understanding of the techniques and measures for energy management and conservation.
- Use the CHP site assessment tool to critically evaluate the selection of CHP plant. (Contributes to AHEP4 outcomes M2 & M3)
Skills outcomes
The students will develop the skills to perform an energy audit of an industrial process or commercial installation.
Syllabus
- Energy management techniques: Role of the Energy Manager. Energy audit and analysis. Energy economic evaluation. Heat transfer in buildings. Carbon audit. Degree day.
- Boilers and combustion: Combustion control. High efficiency boilers.
- Industrial energy conservation: Waste heat recovery. Heat pump applications. Total energy systems (CHP). Furnace performance. Carbon savings and regulations (EU-ETS).
