Objectives
To provide a foundation for understanding and rationalising the wider aspects of inorganic chemistry which will be covered in subsequent years. It emphasises the systematic nature of the subject and uses the Periodic Table as a framework for discussing the trends in the properties and chemical behaviour of the main group and transition elements.At the end of this module students should be able to:
- understand the relationship between atomic structure and the Periodic Table of the Elements;
- describe some common lattice types adopted by metals and simple ionic compounds, and have a critical appreciation of the spherical ion model used to describe these structures;
- describe the fundamental differences in chemical properties and behaviour displayed by the elements in the first row of the Periodic Table;
- rationalise the systematic trends in chemical behaviour in going down a group and across a period;
- understand the factors which determine the stability of a transition metal complexes;
- understand the electronic effects resulting from complex formation and their use in characterising the types of complex formed;
- assess the relative merits of available theories of co-ordination.

- Chemical trends within groups of elements
- Chemistry of Hydrogen and elements Li - Ne
- Distinguishing features of transition elements
- Co-ordination chemistry: Bonding theories.
