Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:(i) possess a competence and understanding of practical surface and colloid chemistry
(ii) have developed the unique manipulative skills necessary in surface chemistry
(iii) fully understand problems eg contamination associated with surface chemical experiments.

Syllabus
Experiments will be carried out in the following topic areas:
- oil in water emulsions
- turbidity measurements in silica
- titration of hydrophobic TI02
- electrophoresis experiments
- rheology experiments
- CMC measurement of ionic surfactant
- surface tensiometry - determination of area per surfactant molecule air-water interface from Gibbs equation
- particle sizing of colloidal nanostructures.

- 3 hours reading preparation for each experiment- 6 hours report preparation and exercises per experiment.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Experimental laboratory reports marked at regular (approximately weekly) intervals throughout the semester- Completion of computer-based assignments and exercises at intervals.
