Module summary
The aim of this module is to introduce students to various aspects of sustainability science and technology, which will guide their selection of optional modules for more in-depth study and their research project in semester 3. The topics covered include ethical aspects of sustainability, CO2 capture and utilisation, renewable energy, sustainable materials and circular economy, chemical feedstock and advanced manufacturing, water, waste and environmental contamination.Objectives
The module will provide students with:• an understanding of the ethical aspects of sustainability
• an understanding of the role of science and technology in achieving sustainability
• an understanding of current pressing challenges in sustainability
• an overall working knowledge of the various areas of sustainability science and technology
• a holistic view of sustainability assessment, including life cycle assessment
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explain the ethical aspects of sustainability
2. Explain the role of science and technology in achieving sustainability
3. Analyse the current pressing challenges in sustainability science and technology
4. Apply a holistic view to sustainability assessment, including life cycle assessment
Skills Learning Outcomes
During the module students will demonstrate the following skills:
5. Critically analyse sustainability challenges and potential areas which can be improved.
6. Practiced integrated problem solving in selecting suitable technologies to address sustainable energy, transport and manufacturing challenges.
7. Practiced presentation skills
Syllabus
Students will be introduced to topics in sustainability science and technology including: holistic concepts of sustainability, CO2 capture and utilisation, energy challenges and solutions, biodegradability and recycling of materials, precious metals, electronics materials, chemical feedstock, water resources, waste and contamination.
Students will have opportunities to practice and develop their understanding of the topics through interactive lectures and two workshops.
