Module summary
The aim of this module is to provide students with basic and practical knowledge of the principles of Green Chemistry, and how they apply to different industry, from energy (carbon dioxide sequestration and utilisation) to commodity, specialty and high value chemical manufacturing. Students will have opportunities to practice and develop their understanding of the topics through workshops and case studies.Objectives
The module will provide students with:• an understanding of the twelve principles of green chemistry
• common green metrics and their context/limitations
• current sustainability limitations of chemical manufacturing and chemical feedstock
• practical aspects and current technology for carbon dioxide sequestration
• role of catalysis in green chemistry
• sustainable chemical processes from a holistic point of view
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Explain the principles of green chemistry, through examples in different chemical sectors
2. Calculate green metrics to compare the sustainability of chemical processes
3. Scrutinise a chemical process and critique the carbon footprint of feedstock, efficiency of workup/purification and its environmental impact.
4. Analyse and apply carbon dioxide sequestration technologies to CO2 producing chemical processes
Skills Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have:
5. Applied system thinking when assessing the sustainability of chemical processes.
6. Applied critical thinking to analyse and evaluate published chemical processes in group.
7. Practiced presentation skills in a video-captured group presentation.
Syllabus
Students will be introduced to topics underpinning Green Chemistry including: principles of Green Chemistry;
1) sustainable chemical feedstock;
2) carbon dioxide sequestration and utilisation;
3) sustainable catalysis;
4) green solvents;
5) green metrics for chemical processes, and;
6) holistic approaches to sustainable chemical process design.

Assessment for this module will consist of;

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
