Objectives
The objective of this module is for students to undertake an individual research project where they:a) Identify and define a research problem and research gap. Draw up a workplan, identifying aims and objectives achievable within the time available;
b) Understand how to conduct independent research working within a constrained timescale;
c) Plan and execute a short-term research programme;
d) Analyse and discuss their results and draw appropriate conclusions (including, as appropriate, to collect, analyse and synthesise data);
e) Understand the limitations of the work/problem;
f) Prepare a dissertation on their work (presenting information in a logical and cohesive way);
g) Communicate technical information to a non-expert audience.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes (contributing to the AHEP4 learning outcomes indicated between brackets):
1. Apply knowledge of mathematics/statistics/engineering principles, to formulate/analyse complex problems and reach substantial conclusions (M1, M2);
2. Select and apply appropriate computational and analytical techniques to model complex problems, recognising the limitations of the techniques employed (M3);
3. Select and evaluate technical literature and other relevant sources of information to address a complex problem. (M4);
4. Apply an integrated/systematic approach to investigating a complex research problem (M6);
5. Consider ethical implications and make well-reasoned ethical choices (M8);
6. Evaluate and mitigate risks associated with the research project undertaken (M9);
7. Adopt a secure and proportionate approach to the security of data used/generated within the project (M10);
8. Ability to develop and apply relevant practical and laboratory skills to an area of civil engineering research as appropriate for their project. (M12);
9. Select and apply appropriate materials, equipment, engineering technologies and processes, recognising their limitations (M13);
10. Develop knowledge of the legal and contractual issues particularly with respect to Health and Safety procedural requirements in laboratory and field-based research (M15);
11. Function effectively as an individual. Includes taking responsibility for planning and carrying out a programme of research and make appropriate adjustments to schedules and methodologies on an on-going basis. (M16);
12. Communicate effectively on complex engineering matters to technical and non-technical audiences (M17);
(Where a C and M included the LO tends to fully meet at C, but partially at M).
This module will be used for the formative and summative assessment of English language competency.

Syllabus
Students may undertake either a design project (typically one of a small number of pre-set projects) or an individual research project.
Projects are supervised on a one-to-one basis and assessment is by written report, all students make an individual submission.
The module will include a number of lectures on ethical issues related to the themes of this module and overall programme of study.
