Module summary

This module introduces key project management concepts and definitions, their evaluation and application in construction engineering projects. It explores the connection between the ‘project’ as route to implement and achieve sustainable development objectives. An understanding of the ethical dimensions of planning and delivering projects is developed. Moreover, using the lens of sustainable development, the module will consider the topic of project evaluation and appraisal and it develops an understanding of the project life cycle management.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to understand the key project management concepts and definitions and to differentiate among the most common sustainability and sustainable development issues and concerns (with particular reference to infrastructure and construction projects). The module will allow students to critically evaluate how projects are connected to the implementation and the achievement of sustainable development objectives, to understand the ethical dimensions of planning and delivering projects, and to discuss and apply common project evaluation and appraisal techniques in relation to sustainability.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Critical understanding of key project management concepts, their evaluation and application to construction engineering projects.
2. Critically evaluate the bi-directional link between projects and sustainability agenda for the project organization. (APM Sustainability TK1.1, 1.2) (CIOB Learning Outcome G)
3. Understanding the sustainability issues in planning and delivering projects
4. Apply common project evaluation and appraisal techniques to assess project sustainability. (APM Sustainability TK1.4) (CIOB Learning Outcome J)
5. Understand and adopt mechanisms that can be used to embed sustainability in project implementation and deliverable. (APM Sustainability TK1.3)
6. Judge appropriate ethical behaviours in the planning and implementation of projects. (CIOB Learning Outcome H)
7. Understand the connection between project management objectives and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
8. Apply common evaluation and appraisal techniques in the planning and monitoring of project sustainability. (APM Sustainability TK1.5) (CIOB Learning Outcome J)
9. Investigate the latest development in the sustainable project management field. (APM Sustainability TK1.6)
