Module summary

Working on large scale engineering and infrastructure projects involves working with a vast variety of individuals in changing organisational settings. This module will enable you to understand the diverse relationships and responsibilities, including leadership, teamworking and stakeholder engagement, within a project context. It will provide you with the knowledge and skills to navigate these relationships and responsibilities in different project settings and contribute to the development of an inclusive and positive working environment.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of key concepts for relating to people working on and associated with projects. This includes an understanding of diverse interpersonal behaviours and relationships in projects associated with leadership, teamworking and stakeholder engagement as well as the cross-cutting issues of conflict management and negotiation. Furthermore, the module aims to develop the students’ understanding of the principles of professional ethics, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) required in the exercise of these behaviours and as an integral part of their relationships.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of teamworking and leadership approaches, taking into account the complexities of the project setting and develop strategies for improvement. (CIOB Learning Outcome N) (APM Conflict Resolution TK1.3; Leadership TK1.1)
2. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of stakeholder engagement approaches, taking into account the complexities of the project setting and develop strategies for improvement. (APM Leadership TK1.5; Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Management TK1.1, TK1.4; Diversity and inclusion TK1.3, TK1.4)
3. Critically evaluate and resolve the differences between individuals and interest groups, considering the strategies for negotiation and conflict management. (APM Conflict Resolution TK1.1, TK1.2, TK1.4; Leadership TK1.2, TK1.3; Diversity and inclusion TK1.1, 1.2)
4. Critically evaluate ways to build and maintain an inclusive environment that embraces a diverse culture. (CIOB Learning Outcome E) (APM Conflict Resolution TK1.6; Stakeholder Engagement and Communication Management TK1.5, TK1.6)
5. Apply professional ethics and corporate social values to situations and choices in projects. (CIOB Learning Outcome H) (APM Diversity and inclusion TK1.6)
