Module summary

Projects are the vehicles to deliver strategy and this module will introduce students to the interrelationship between an organisation’s strategy and the project. The module will also allow students to obtain knowledge about governance systems which comprise the framework of authority and accountability that defines the outputs, outcomes and benefits from projects.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of key concepts relating to strategy and organisation of projects. This includes an understanding of the role of the project to deliver strategy, the interrelationship between an organisation’s strategy and the project in the form of requirements as well as the effects on the project strategy including project management methodologies. Furthermore, it aims to develop the students’ understanding of organisational aspects in and of projects including the design of governance systems that will allow them to embrace the ambiguity they will inevitably face when managing (major) projects as organisational forms. Students will be equipped with conceptual and practical tools to tackle the challenges that they will have to address in their career, be these the delivery of social and environmental benefits, or the regeneration of areas through major infrastructure projects.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Distinguish and critique project management methodologies
2. Appraise the role of projects in strategy delivery in the organisational context
3. Explain the reasons for, and advantages and disadvantages of different formal organisational structures
4. Develop and assess governance arrangements and systems within various organisational structural contexts and how confidence in these arrangements and systems can be maintained (APM Governance Arrangements TK1.1, TK1.2)
5. Critically analyse the various levels of ownership within organisational governance and project governance structures as well as the interrelationship between organisational and project governance (APM Governance Arrangements TK1.3, TK1.4)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be provided through an online quiz within each unit covered in the syllabus. Students will also work on practical examples and cases during the seminars and will receive feedback during these sessions.
