Pre-requisite qualifications

The standard qualifications (or equivalent) set by the School of Civil Engineering for entry to any of its JBM accredited UG programmes.

This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

Students will gain an enhanced critical understanding of the influence that design practice and theoretical writings have on each other. Students will have a general understanding and knowledge of recent architectural theory, with an enhanced understanding of a more focused theme through critical evaluation. Students will develop research and analysis techniques, enhancing their ability to critically evaluate and communicate theoretical and conceptual design thinking.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:

ARB General Criteria for Part 1:

1. Ability to develop a conceptual and critical approach to architectural design that integrates and satisfies the aesthetic aspects of a building and the technical requirements of its construction and the needs of the user. GC1.3;

2. Ability to develop the cultural, social and intellectual histories, theories and technologies that influence the design of buildings; GC2.1;

3. Develop understanding of the influence of history and theory on the spatial, social, and technological aspects of architecture; GC2.2.

Syllabus

Students carry out an individual investigation into an aspect of architectural history & theory from a selected list of themes. Guided by lectures, seminars and tutorials, this primarily literature-sourced project will allow students to develop their own understanding of the relationship between theoretical writing and design practice.

This module is a significantly self-directed investigative study, with students choosing a research topic from a given list of current issues in architectural history & theory. Students undertake a literature review of the chosen topic, analysing and evaluating their findings before writing a 5,000 word essay of their findings and insights.
