Objectives

To enable students to acquire a detailed knowledge of two Roman comedies, Plautus Casina and Terence Phormio, with particular emphasis on problems of staging and production. On completion of the module students should be able to understand the literary tradition of New Comedy and the Greek background to the Roman plays; they should know how the plays were produced and performed in Rome, and be able to recognise differences in style and emphasis between the two authors studied.

Syllabus

The module will examine the Greek background to Roman Comedy, and the general conditions of staging and production for Roman festivals in the time of Plautus and Terence. The dramatic structure, themes and characterisation of each play will be analysed in detail, and differences of approach between the two authors highlighted. Some consideration will be given to the problem of how the Roman authors may have changed their Greek originals for production on the Roman stage.

Teaching methods

Lectures: 20 x 1 hour;

Seminars: 2 x 1 hour.

Methods of assessment

1,500 word essay 40%, submitted at the end of Week 11;
One 2 hour examination with passages for comment.
