Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:
- have an elementary understanding of physical mechanisms and applications of electrochemical methods;
- use of electrochemistry in biotechnology and biosensors and comparison with related techniques.

Students will gain practical experience in basic electrochemical experiments.

Skills outcomes
- Chemistry: electrochemistry and understanding thereof, elementary kinetics and thermodynamics, practical applications.

- Biochemistry: biosensors, bioelectrochemistry.

- Static, galvanic and electrolytic cells
- Design of electrochemical experiment
- Polarography and voltammetry, electrodeposition, Nernst equation, reversibility and irreversibility
- Electrode materials
- Reference electrodes
- Mediated electrode reactions
- Biosensors
- Bioelectroanalytical and related techniques
- Potentiometry
- pH meausurement
- Ion selective electrodes
