Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- design and plan with guidance from a supervisor, a research-type project;
- define aims and objectives;
- plan a coherent programme of experiments;
- practise good research methodology;
- search for and assimilate scientific and technical information from a range of sources;
- understand new concepts via self study;
- apply new learning in a problem-solving situation; and
- should be proficient in one or more new experimental or computational techniques.
Syllabus
Following a short induction programme (which will provide general information and instruction on topics such as safety in the laboratory and the COSHH regulations, library and literature search facilities), students will undertake a substantial laboratory-based project. This will be allocated from a list of available topics, taking into account the preferences of the student, and will be supervised by a member of staff. A second supervisor will also be allocated for additional support. During the initial stages of the project, the student will work in co-operation with the supervisor to formulate the direction of the research. The major part of the project will feature the collection and evaluation of relevant experimental data to meet the specific aims and objectives of the project. The students will be supported by regular supervisions with their research supervisor to prepare them for the final presentation stages of the project. The latter will include the preparation of a substantial written report on which the applicant will be orally examined in a viva.

Private study
Students will meet regularly with a project supervisor, and will also discuss progress with a project assessor. The project supervisor and assessor will be an academic member of staff with research interests within the field of nanotechnology. Supervision and assessment will be carried out according to a standard protocol set for all projects. All projects will be double marked from the beginning.Experimental/computational/theoretical programmes: 240 hours
Background reading/research: 80 hours
Assessment tasks: 80 hours
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Weekly meetings with supervisor- Regular meetings with project assessor
- Student's initial project design
- Interim report
- Supervisors and Assessors mark and feedback for interim report, and for interim stage continual assessment
