Module summary
This module provides you with an introduction to the academic study of media and communication. The module will teach you key perspectives and approaches to studying media and communication and demonstrate how these can be used to understand and analyse contemporary issues and examples. At the same time, the module will show you how the general academic skills you develop in ELU0033 Academic Study Skills can be applied to the study of media and communication.Objectives
This module provides an introduction to the academic study of media and communication. The module will teach students key perspectives and approaches in media and communication studies and consider how they can be used to understand and analyse contemporary issues and examples. Students will be shown how the general academic skills they develop within ELU0033 Academic Study Skills can be applied to the study of media and communication specifically.Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate academic skills and knowledge in media and communication required for study at undergraduate level
2. Apply academic skills and knowledge to understand and critically analyse an important contemporary issue in media and communication
3. Communicate ideas clearly through academic writing
4. Communicate ideas clearly through verbal presentation
Syllabus
This module introduces key perspectives and approaches in media and communication for studying media industries, texts, technologies, users/audiences, and their broader social contexts. The module will show how these perspectives and approaches can be used to understand and analyse contemporary examples and issues in the field, from the representation of identity and culture to the regulation of a changing media environment. At the same time, the module will show how general academic skills in reading, research, writing, and presentation can be applied to the study of media and communication.

Private study
Student are expected to dedicate at least 345 hours to private study. During this time, students should work independently on (1) completing module readings or other weekly seminar tasks and (2) preparing their module assessments.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided to students throughout the module. Students will receive feedback in seminars as they complete weekly tasks for their portfolio and contribute to seminar discussions. Written feedback on assessments will help with the preparation of subsequent assessments (e.g., students will receive feedback on the essay plan and this will help them to prepare the 1500-2000 word essay). All tutors also have weekly office hours where they are available to discuss module content and assessments.Methods of assessment
