Module summary
This introductory module is designed to introduce students to an understanding of the ontological and technological nature of photography. It will develop photographic techniques based on the basic analogue and intermediate digital production and editing of images. The module will allow students to develop key analogue and digital photographic techniques and enable them to situate their own practice within broader cultural discourses. It will also develop ethical and legal frameworks and risk aware practice. It will be delivered through a combination of lectures, themed practical exercises, workshops and seminars.Objectives
The key objectives of this module are to:1. Introduce students to the principle techniques of digital photography and to develop key skills in relation to the capture and postproduction of digital photographs.
2. Introduce students to the history of dominant photographic practices.
3. Develop an understanding of the relationships between photographic tradition and their own practice.
4. Begin to place their own practice within broader cultural discourses.
Learning outcomes
On completing the module students should:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the ontological and technical basis of photography.
2. Evidence the principle techniques of basic analogue and digital photographic production and post production.
3. Produce and edit digital images to an intermediate standard.
4. Evidence ethical awareness in relation to their practice.
5. Contextualise and situate practice within broader photographic traditions and cultural discourses.

Private study
Throughout the course of this module students will be engaged in guided reading andpractice-based exercises leading to two summative pieces of work and a multiple choice examination. The period of private study will be a combination of critical and historical reading and the development of analogue and digital photographic practice towards the submission of their portfolio images, cumulative portfolio and examination.
The independent online learning will comprise of a guided series of tutorials for Adobe Creative Suite accessed through Adobe TV http://tv.adobe.com/
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will be monitored via an ongoing summative assessment process, receiving feedback at each stage. They will also be monitored via the tutorial and practical sessions as they develop their submissions.Methods of assessment
