Module summary

This module has been designed to allow students to study key elements of contemporary photographic and convergent practice and situate them within developing traditions of practice and broader critical frameworks.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:


Engage with key issues and debates in relation to contemporary practice.

Demonstrate an understanding of key critical approaches that have been used to frame them.

Demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of photographic and convergent practices.

Use practice as a means of exploring critical and theoretical concepts and apply it to their own work.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the relationships between cultural
production, representation and audiences.

Demonstrate an awareness of the global nature of critical discourses around convergent lens -based practice.

Produce practice that demonstrates the divergences and synergies between cinema and photography in the communication of ideas and concepts.

Learning outcomes
Students will develop:

An understanding of key current debates and critical thinking in relation to contemporary photographic practice.

An appreciation of how these critical frameworks relate to their practice.

An understanding of how contemporary practitioners and critical thinkers have conceptualised the nature of photographic and convergent practices.

A knowledge of the cultural and political contexts in which practice exists and an understanding of how it impacts debates about social issues.

Syllabus

The syllabus will be delivered through a series of lectures and seminars covering contemporary issues such as the nature of practice, the status of photographic technologies, the future of photography and cinema, the impact of digital practices, the theory/practice divide, authorship and publishing, contemporary practice and society, the status of the artist, convergence, new photojournalism, the ethics of picturing, representation and the rise of analogue practice.

Private study

Private study will consist of the reading seminar texts, independent research for assessments, practical and creative work, editing and publication.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through an early formative assessment, attendance monitoring, participation in seminars and through the summative assessment regime. In addition they will be monitored through tutorials where work in progress will be discussed.
