Module summary
This module examines how design is used to communicate specific types of information: from diagrams to infographics and pictograms. It will equip students with knowledge about how design attributes are used to communicate information. The module will provide students with historical, theoretical and practical perspectives regarding information design. It provides opportunities to test out and apply theories and principles while designing their own information design outcomes.Objectives
This module aims to equip students with knowledge of information design principles as well as historical and theoretical knowledge in the area.The objectives are to 1) introduce fundamental concepts of information design 2) provide key skills in practical design of information 3) support students to integrate the theory and practice of information design through evaluative reflection.
Learning activities are varied. To achieve objective 1, students will learn key principles informed by a series of seminars and lectures. To achieve objective 2, practical workshops will demonstrate how best to use relevant design software in the design of information. To achieve objective 3, students will engage with a series of seminars to learn how to evaluate outcomes and apply theory to practise.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. apply knowledge of theories and principles of information design;
2. critically evaluate artefacts that inform or instruct;
3. design a set of information design responses to a communication problem.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. communicate ideas clearly through visual and written information.
5. apply skills in reflectivity as they critique theirs and others’ work.
