Creative Thinking (Sem 2)

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Module summary

This module explores the subject of ‘creativity’ both from a theoretical and practical perspective. In this module students will learn how creativity is examined within the disciplines of both Psychology (what is creativity and can it be defined/measured?) and Design (what design processes can foster creativity?). Students will learn and practice a range of creative thinking techniques, individually and in teams. They will also examine how creative practitioners from a range of disciplines talk about their own personal creativity. In interactive workshops a range of theories and principles are introduced and examined. Students work individually and in groups using in-class ideation exercises or short research projects to devise and evaluate processes and solutions for a range of design challenges

Objectives

This module has three key objectives. Students will learn how creativity is defined and examine principles of creative thinking both from theoretical texts and testimonies of creative practitioners. Students will practice a range of creative techniques to improve their own design process. Students will also learn how to evaluate their own and others’ creative processes. The workshop structure of the module facilitates active learning through a series of interactive tasks framed within the context of a specific technique, principle or skill.
