Module summary

This module builds on the student learning from their first year. This module explores the effect that decisions made during the product development cycle can have on the environmental and social impacts of a fashion item. Students will be exposed to more advanced lifecycle tools to help them quantify these effects. They will also critically examine international legislation to think consider how it impacts the design process.

Objectives

Building on the knowledge acquired from their first year modules, students studying this module will, through a mix of lecture and practical classes, develop critical and analytical skills to allow them to analyse the significant influence garment design and manufacturing process decisions can have on both the performance and the environmental and social impact of fashion products.

The complexity of legislation will be further explored and students will be exposed to more advanced lifecycle tools to support the critical analysis of decisions and subsequent impacts of the product development process.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1: Experiment with a range of ideas to explore and evaluate emerging solutions to contemporary sustainability challenges experienced in the product development cycle.
2: Employ and appraise skills and knowledge to explore and develop outcomes for sustainable fashion in response to a project brief.
3: Differentiate concepts, arguments, and outcomes in a variety of forms, applying theories and practices in response to a project brief.
4: Apply effective written/ visual/ oral communication skills in the presentation of their work.
5: Employ life cycle tools to understand the impact of design decisions.
6: Demonstrate an ability to critically reflect on their work and their strengths and weaknesses.
