Module summary

This module extends students’ understanding of sustainable fashion in terms of the triple bottom line (environmental, social and economic) by engaging them in a process of critical analysis for the industry. The module will challenge students to explore the industry objectively and to identify how the industry could or should be developing strategies to embrace environmental and social sustainability within ethical business models. The module will explore new initiatives and cutting-edge approaches to sustainability to provide the tools for a strategic review that meets the programme themes of environment, society, business and culture.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to develop research and critical analysis skills applied to an exploration of the fashion industry and sustainability, where students apply learnings from Level 1 & 2 to actively and objectively consider the current and future state of the industry in terms of environmental, social and economic factors. Through this approach students will be exposed to the complexity and ambiguity of sustainability in practice, the need for compromise and the role stakeholders have in the global and local contexts of sustainability. The complexity of consumer behaviour in relation to the function of fashion and the importance of sustainability during the purchasing process is included.
