Module summary
This is a key module in which students will consider creative practice in its intellectual, social, cultural, economic, and aesthetic contexts. This may involve visits to Art and Design organisations and opportunities to work on live briefs both within the university and beyond. This will give students employability and professional practice experience and further their understanding of the cultural and commercial creative industries. The module is divided into three sections: 1) a theoretical introduction 2) a case study 3) a portfolio and report. Objectives
This module gives students the opportunity to:- Understand and critically reflect on a range of contexts in which art and design practice and practitioners operate, through an analysis of a range of theoretical texts and cultural organisations.
- research and analyse a case study relevant to their own art and design practice.
- develop a creative project which responds to the social, cultural, and economic issues explored and reflects ethical consideration of their own practice.
This module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, fieldwork visits and practicals. Lectures will engage students with contemporary approaches to issues in the creative and commercial art and design industries and contexts. Fieldwork visits to organisations will give students the opportunity to understand, discuss and apply these issues at first hand. Practical sessions will reflect what has been introduced during the lectures and fieldwork aiding them in the development of their creative project.
