Module summary

This module introduces students to key academic, professional and team-working skills. This module prepares students for future studies in dentistry, introducing many of the different learning, teaching and assessment methods that students will encounter throughout their programme.Unless your programme is designed to be delivered fully online, your programme and modules will be delivered predominantly on campus. These teaching activities will be supported by the use of digital tools to enhance your learning and experience. The catalogue provides details of your module and the teaching methods used to deliver your module (for example, lecture, seminar, tutorial, practical). It does not necessarily provide you with information about the mode of delivery for specific learning activities on your module (whether these will be on campus or delivered digitally). Information about the delivery mode for learning and teaching activities for your modules will be published in the timetable and in the Minerva area for your modules. We sometimes need to adapt our teaching to take account of developments in the subject, in response to new research and current affairs for example, and on occasion we may need to adapt our delivery modes too. Objectives

The aim of this module is to introduce students to study skills, communication skills and professionalism and ethics in relation to dentistry.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate the academic skills required for studying on dental programmes
2. Reflect on academic, personal and professional strengths and weaknesses both individually and as part of a team
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the dental professional-patient relationship
4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of ethics and professionalism in Dentistry and GDC requirements for Student Fitness to Practise

Private study

Students are expected to spend their private study time preparing for taught activities including completing any readings and tasks set in advance of these activities. Private study time will also be spent on meetings with personal tutors and fellow students in group work. The remainder of private study time should be spent on formative, summative and progressional assessments
