Module summary

This intensive Chinese language module is designed for students who have limited or no previous exposure to Chinese. It progresses fast and aims to help students to improve all four basic skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in a balanced way through a range of lectures and practical classes. Both simplified and full-form traditional Chinese characters are introduced and basic IT skills regarding typing Chinese characters are also introduced.

Objectives

The objective of the module is to help students build a solid foundation of the four basic skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing in an interactive and communicative learning environment. Students will work with both simplified Chinese characters (read, write and type) and traditional Chinese characters (read).

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Mastery of pinyin and reading and writing in simplified Chinese characters, with the ability to recognize these characters in their traditional form.
2. Recognition and use of correct tones and application of essential features of Chinese grammar, both orally and in writing, utilising the introduced structures.
3. Explain and/or interpret passages on everyday topics written in Chinese characters or presented in recorded audios that have been introduced during the course.
4. Discuss basic everyday topics in culturally appropriate conversations and through the production of simple, structured pieces of writing in Chinese.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Effective organisation of time and independent work consolidating material covered in class;
6. Proficient use of digital resources for a range of language learning tasks;
7. Successful adoption of proactive language learning strategies.

- Students’ oral report regarding the main grammatical points in drill classes.
- Monitored exercises including simplified Chinese character recognition and writing, reading comprehension and translation in drill classes.
- Monitored exercises including tone recognition, listening comprehension and speaking in practical classes with feedback given in class.
- Monitored exercises including traditional Chinese character recognition, oral translation/communication and dictation in practical classes.
