Module summary
Examine the important cultural changes associated with modernisation in China since the 19th century - why and how they happened, how they are reflected in literature, film and other art forms, the impact of Chairman Mao and the Communist Rule, changes in the position of women and urban culture.Objectives
To introduce the main developments of modern Chinese literature and ideology.Syllabus
The introduction of European thought, the development of modern literature and film. The sinification of Marxism and the treatment of gender and cultural issues under the Chinese Communists. Orthodoxy and dissent in intellectual life under the People's Republic of China.
