Objectives
By the end of this module, students will:- have a greater awareness and understanding of the language of documentary Chinese related to the areas of society and development;
- have a greater understanding of the broader significance of the particular documents studied, and of the context in which they were produced.
Learning outcomes
To write Chinese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Chinese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.
Skills outcomes
- Improved reading comprehension skills of documentary Chinese related to the areas of society and development;
- Improved analytical skills of complex and specialised texts;
Chinese to English translation skills.
Syllabus
The module will be run in student-led seminar-style classes. A variety of contemporary and important texts from the fields of society and development in China will be chosen - given the contemporary nature of this course, the specifics of individual texts will necessarily vary from year to year.
The classes will consist of close readings of these texts, and discussion of implied meanings and the contexts from which they were produced. Key texts covered will concern topics such as rural development initiatives, social policy and contemporary issues such as migration.The module will be run in student-led seminar-style classes.
