Objectives

The year abroad will take the form of one year's full-time language study in a University or Language Institute in Thailand.

During this part of their degree programme, students will have the opportunity to:
- make substantial linguistic progress, over a wide range of registers, in respect of the target language;
- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/personal/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
By the end of their Year Abroad students should be able to:
- communicate fluently and appropriately, demonstrating a high degree of grammatical accuracy in the target language
- consolidate and extend knowledge and understanding of complex structures and registers of the target language
- demonstrate sophisticated receptive and productive skills, in a variety of contexts
- demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the target culture and society.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to:
- use language creatively and communicate information and ideas
- demonstrate self-reliance and adaptability in developing an awareness and understanding of a culture and society other than their own
- exercise personal responsibility and decision making.

Syllabus

Students should make themselves familiar with the requirements for the year abroad as laid out in EAST Year Abroad Handbook. These documents are dispensed at the year abroad meetings (level 1) and are also available online.

Private study

Students will be expected to immerse themselves in the culture and language of the host country and undertake those activities necessary for successful completion of the year abroad programme.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will maintain contact with the School by e-mail; they will inform the year abroad co-ordinator of their progress and will seek approval in advance of any change.

Monitoring of progress is also undertaken by the host institution and communicated regularly to Leeds YA tutors.

If parts of the Year Abroad requirements are not completed, students may be required (at the discretion of the Module Leader) to undertake a re-sit exam (see Thailand Year Abroad Handbook). If students do not fulfill the residency requirement, or there is evidence of no serious attempt to fulfill the requirements of the study placement, students may be required to re-sit the year abroad at their own expense.
