Pre-requisite qualifications

This modules does not have any pre-requisite qualifications. However, it is anticipated that the students who would benefit most from this module will be looking to gain work experience (which could be summer or part-time work) since starting at Leeds and/or participate in the year out Work Placement Elective Module during their third year, (CSER8000)

Module summary

This module aims to provide a framework within which you can be active and reflective learners, and as a result, be more proactive about making the most of the opportunities open to you whilst studying at Leeds. It will support you to reflect upon your choices to date and what influences have been present in your life, creating a space for you to make proactive and informed decisions in the future. You will undertake skills reviews in order to plan for future skill development both in terms of being a successful student, but also looking ahead to transitioning into a graduate.It is suitable for students who are interested in finding out more about themselves and researching the breadth of careers that a graduate can do with an Education related degree.

Objectives

The Module will encourage and develop all students to:
- Develop a clear understanding of the importance and application of reflective skills with regard to personal and professional development
- To understand the impact of how identity is formed and its influence on career choice decisions
- To research and articulate the requirements of graduates by employers, both within and outside the Education sector
- To develop a clear understanding of how key professional skills can be developed, including leadership, teamwork, communication, research and personal action planning
- To develop a great awareness of the breadth of internal employability support structures and opportunities at the University of Leeds and to actively engage with those that are appropriate
- To develop a greater awareness of the external networks and opportunities that are available in order to actively develop their employability skills
- To understand the key components of a CV and Covering Letter and to develop one that is targeted for a specific work experience opportunity
- To develop a personal and professional development plan for their career development during their time at the University of Leeds

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will :

- Have developed a clearer picture and understanding of their own skills, competencies, interests and personal characteristics in relation to work experience and career choices
- Understand what they need to do to develop their employability skills and experience and be aware of the internal and external resources, support and opportunities available to help with this
- Understand how and what they need to do to compete effectively in the work experience and job market
- Produced a targeted and skills based CV and letter
- Have a clear understanding of what skills, competencies, qualities and experience are necessary for a specific occupation/sector and how their suitability meets this criteria.

5 hours - Work Experience research, vacancy searching and 'CV and Cover letter' writing/targeting
10 hours - Post-workshop completion of 'Learning Logs'
20 hours - 'Sector Analysis' research and presentation preparation
35 hours - Research, analysis and report writing for 'Professional Development Portfolio'
10 hours - Action Planning

100 hours of occupational research developing research and written commuunication skills including identifying sources, attending careers events (where relevant), undertaking self analysis, networking etc.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be expected at every taught session.
Students will be monitored to ensure they successfully complete the module and are well prepared for their future career progress. This will be done by:

- VLE Discussion Boards to identify level of individual student engagement.
- Module Tutors will be available for individual consultations out of teaching time regarding ALL aspects of their progress.
- Verbal feedback will be offered to students about their CV and letter though a CV checking service is currently offered daily by the Careers Centre

For each piece of assessed work, students will have access to the marking criteria being used, which tutors will discuss when each piece of assessed work is introduced in the workshops. The criteria will demonstrate what they need to do to achieve a first class, upper second class, etc. mark on this module.
