Module summary
It often seems that everyone has an opinion about education. This module is about developing your ability to move beyond mere opinions to untangling the claims made about contemporary education. You will look at the evidence that can be used to examine these issues critically and you will be supported to examine your educational beliefs so you can establish your position on educational issues that are important to you or your intended professional context. Objectives
This module explores some of the contemporary challenges facing educational systems and those who work in them in a variety of contexts. The module will require students to examine and problematise a range of educational issues using theories and ideas from sociology, psychology, politics, history and philosophy. Students will also be supported and encouraged to make explicit and reflect on their own opinions and personal reactions to a range of issues and to start to establish a considered and critical position in relation to them. The module aims to:- Identify the features of a range of selected contemporary educational issues that make them problematic for particular educational stakeholders
- Critically evaluate research and practice in relation to key debates in education
- Support students to explore a number of positions in relation to key debates in the study of education and to establish their own critically informed positions in relation to them.
