Module summary

This module is designed for School of Education students who are new to research. It aims to give you a foundational understanding of what research is, why we do it and why it is important. You will be supported to develop a potential research proposal for your final year project enabling you to develop an understanding of methods for undertaking research, research ethics, credibility and quality.

Objectives

This module provides an introduction to research approaches and methods in the fields of childhood and youth, and education. Throughout the module students will work towards designing a research project which could form the basis of a final year project. Students will reflect upon definitions and some philosophical underpinnings of research and implications for making ethically-informed decisions. Key concepts and principles of planning and conducting childhood and educational research will be covered. Throughout the module there will be a strong focus on research ethics, quality and credibility. The module is intended to prepare students in the first instance with the basic skills needed to engage efficiently with the final year project module, while also ensuring students become aware of a range of social research approaches they might come into contact with in a future professional context.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module you will be able to:

1. Identify ethical issues in social research design

2. Explain philosophical principles that underpin different research approaches in social research

3. Select literature appropriate for informing research design in childhood and education

4. Formulate ethically appropriate research questions, data generation and data analysis strategies for research in childhood and education

5. Propose a research project in the fields of childhood or education that is ethical, literature-informed and could generate findings that have positive impact in a specific context

On successful completion of the module you will be able to students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Synthesise information from a variety of sources to draw conclusions that may be new to you

2. Communicate your thinking in a way that is clear, concise, focused and appropriate for a professional environment
