Module summary

In this module you will explore the concepts of outdoor & experiential learning through first-hand experience and theoretical critique. You will critically evaluate the uses, benefits, challenges and risks of outdoor & experiential learning with young people. You will also undertake a residential programme of outdoor activities and have the opportunity to participate in regular practicals as well as conservation/restoration projects.

Objectives

The students will develop a broad understanding of the theory and practice of outdoor & experiential learning through study of a range of case studies and speaking to practitioners. Links between outdoor learning and environmental education will be explored through a selection of outdoor activities enabling application of theoretical concepts of learning, facilitation, and leadership to practical activities such as climbing, caving and hill walking.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module you will be able to:

1. Explain the concepts of experiential learning and outdoor learning clearly to young people, parents and practitioners.
2. Apply risk management in outdoor & experiential learning and demonstrate this through practical sessions and fieldwork.
3. Construct and communicate arguments around contemporary issues in outdoor & experiential learning for a range of audiences.
4. Communicate the risks involved in outdoor & experiential learning to stakeholders with limited knowledge of adventurous activities and to contextualise these risks.
5. Analyse the links between outdoor learning and environmental education, as well as some of the critical arguments in this developing field
6. Reflect upon the experience of participating in the module within the context of personal & professional development.

On successful completion of the module students will have
