Module summary
- Are you going to have an English teaching experience at some time in the near future? - Are you worried that you don't know where to start in planning and teaching English? This module will equip you with all you need to get started in the practice of English language teaching. By the end of the module, you will have developed knowledge and skills in teaching grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, and the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. During the module you will get the chance to explore debates around teaching language, and to reflect on your own and others' beliefs about teaching performance. Teaching is by seminar, with many hands-on tasks in which you get the chance to try out and reflect on practical classroom activities. The assignment consists of a 3,000 word essay in which you investigate key issues in language teaching. There are no pre-requisites for this module.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- describe, use and critically evaluate the effectiveness of a range of methodological options for developing students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills;
- describe, use and critically evaluate a range of techniques for presenting and practicing new language;
- demonstrate understanding of the principles underlying these techniques;
- identify and critically evaluate the underlying rationales for approaches taken in a range of current ELT materials;
- critically evaluate their own and others' teaching performance.
Syllabus
The module is intended to provide an introduction to the teaching of English in foreign and second language situations. It also aims to provide students with an introductory overview of the theory underlying the communicative approach to language teaching.
We begin by considering the nature of language and language learning, and go on to look at how these ideas are translated into classroom practice. We consider a range of techniques for introducing and practicing the structures, vocabulary and pronunciation of English, and we look at activities to help language students develop the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
Students will develop their skills, knowledge and understanding through working with the course tutor, peers and individually in a variety of teaching/learning contexts.
Students will participate in a micro-teaching session, in which they will trial language teaching techniques with their peers.
