Module summary

This module will enable to you develop an understanding of schools or related education environment from the perspective of staff to provide an ideal preparation for a career in education.Students into Education gives you the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills built up in level 1 and level 2 modules to real life situations in an educational establishment. You will spend 40 hours on a work placement supported by seminars which allow you to explore issues and ideas from your placement. Working alongside established teachers and education professionals you will have the opportunity to create and review educational resources. A focus on the pedagogy of education will support your understanding of what happens in educational environments. You will receive support and guidance from the School of Education through taught practical seminars and your module tutor. You will be supported throughout the module to create and develop your own materials to use on your placement and you will focus on the theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of your experience. A key aspect of this module is your journey as a reflective educational practitioner; you will be encouraged to record and reflect on your experiences and you will use these reflections to develop your skills of working with and for young people. Working within education is a challenging and ever-changing environment; this module will equip you with a range of experiences to reflect on in the rest of your degree programme and a variety of tools to take into your further training.

Objectives

On completion of this module students will have applied their knowledge and skills in education studies in the classroom. They will have been able to develop their understanding of theoretical issues by applying them in a practical and real life situation. Through working with a range of professionals students will have developed their own professional persona and used their experiences to be a reflective and responsive practitioner.

As many students on this module will be seriously considering careers in teaching, this module will allow students to experience school (or other education-related) environments from the perspective of staff and to understand how such communities operate. The students will gain insight into the relationships between adults and students in education settings and observe at first hand the opportunities and challenges facing teachers and other education professionals.

- That you have completed the required placement hours
- The ability to search for, select and use relevant resources in classroom and other educational settings.
- That you have developed an understanding of educational pedagogy and you can apply this in planning teaching and learning activities.

- That you can apply your understanding of inclusion and diversity within classrooms or educational organisations.
- That you are able to critically analyse and reflect on your experience.
