Module summary

In this module you will complete a 40 hour placement in an education setting, and will learn about how the theory and research covered in seminars relates to practice in different settings. You will consider social, political and ethical aspects of working in education and explore the impact of the type of setting on the way teaching and learning happens. You will find your own placement, which will give you the flexibility to work in a setting that is most relevant for your interests and career aspirations. You will also extend your experience of workplace observation and of preparing/gathering resources and activities for education.

Objectives

In this module students undertake a placement in an education setting, which may be formal or informal, depending on their interests. It is anticipated that placements will be in nurseries, primary schools, SILCs or in a wider education service such as Leeds Museums and Galleries. On placement students will support colleagues, observe practice, and take responsibility for some small-group activities. The module seminars develop student thinking about teaching and learning in different settings, using contemporary learning theories to reflect on their observations and experiences. Students will broaden their understanding of inclusion and accessibility and be able to design/support inclusive learning activities.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, which includes a minimum 40 hour placement in a school or other educational organisation in the region (both observing and assisting with planning and delivery of teaching or services), you will be able to demonstrate:

1. That you have completed the required placement hours

2. That you are able to relate ideas and literature covered throughout the module to the realities of education practice.

3. That you understand classroom management and support issues and are able to apply practical and appropriate solutions.

4. That you understand and can plan for issues relating to inclusion in education settings.

5. That you are aware of current political and social contexts for education and you are sensitive to such issues in your planning of resources.

6. That you are able to critically analyse and reflect on your experience.

Syllabus

The module will consist of a series of group seminars which will support students in their placements. A focus will be placed on the student’s ability to reflect on and review their own practice and they will be encouraged to openly discuss and debate their own assumptions, challenges, successes, learning and progress. A thematic approach will be taken, to cover issues that relate to education in a wide range of settings.

The seminars will mix theory with practical activities to cover:

Understanding the educational context

Teacher-learner relationships

The impact of place and space on learning and teaching

Multimodality in teaching and learning

Resources, accessibility and inclusion

Best reflective practice
