Module summary
This module provides students the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their practical teaching, management and supervisory skills within either a school or peripatetic deaf education setting. This will take place in Semester 2, year 2 of the programme (school terms Spring 2 or Summer 1). Students will work closely with a placement mentor and a University Regional Tutor using PebblePad to log their progress and attainment against the requirements of the Mandatory Qualification of Teacher of the Deaf.Objectives
This module will provide the necessary knowledge and in particular the skills to meet the competencies required by the Mandatory Qualification of the Teacher of the Deaf in the areas of:Standard 3 Working in Partnership with families
Standard 8 Inclusive classroom practices and pedagogies
And elements of:
Standard 1 The current legislative and educational Framework
Standard 2: Personal and professional development
Standard 5: Educational Audiology
Standard 4 Communication and language development
Standard 6: Cognitive development and Learning Needs
Standard 7: Social development and emotional development of deaf children
This module will provide the opportunity to identify a teaching placement that is different from their normal working context to demonstrate their skills with a different age of pupil. Students will build on the knowledge and skills developed across the programme, work closely with a placement tutor and University tutor to demonstrate their learning through practice.
A key objective of this module is to develop skills of self-reflection and evaluation of interaction and facilitating learning for children and young people who are deaf.
Learning outcomes
Students will demonstrate their skills in, and work with parents /carers and professionals to:
employ and evaluate a range of strategies to support effective communication in different educational environments.
employ and evaluate a range of different teaching strategies and resources (people and materials) to provide an inclusive learning environment for deaf learners and their peers.
employ and evaluate the impact of support strategies for skill development, knowledge acquisition and independence/autonomy of a deaf child or young person.
use differentiated teaching strategies to optimise literacy and numeracy skills development.
Students will demonstrate they are:

have the confidence and skills to ensure that their recommendations are implemented so deaf learners can achieve their potential

Syllabus
Teaching will be individualised to meet the needs of the student in their chosen setting. It will include development of skills including:
planning, assessment and reporting for individual and groups of deaf children and young people
developing a supportive classroom and learning environment for a deaf child or young person
classroom communication
facilitating the social and emotional development and well-being of deaf children and young people
partnership working
supporting other educational professionals to develop appropriate knowledge and skills to facilitate learning for deaf children and young people
self-reflection and evaluation of teaching, communication and professional partnerships

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The students will receive a pre -placement observation and visit from their Regional University tutor, to discuss and prepare for the placement.Students will receive ongoing support and feedback throughout the placement.
They will be observed twice by the University Regional tutor and twice by the placement mentor followed by oral and written feedback.

Students’ individual placement objectives will be developed in conjunction with their Regional University Tutor to ensure that they draw on the theoretical knowledge and understanding presented in the programme modules. The final placement reflective report (2000 words) will require the students to reflect on the outcome of these objectives bringing together their academic knowledge and practical skills, and clearly identifying their future professional development objectives.
