Module summary
This module explores the implications of deafness for cognitive development and the role that language plays in the development of cognitive functions e.g., memory, executive functions, Theory of Mind. Consideration is given to how to optimise individuals’ learning opportunities, particularly in classroom settings. It is recognised that deafness may coexist with other disabilities and a range of factors known to shape how a child may learn. Objectives
This module will provide the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the competencies required by the Mandatory Qualification of the Teacher of the Deaf in the areas of:Standard 6: Cognitive Development and Learning Needs
Standard 8: Inclusive Classroom Practices and Pedagogies
Through the completion of this module students will develop an in-depth understanding of how deafness influences the development of cognitive skills, the role of language in this process and the implications for how a deaf child or young person learns. Students will reflect on the implications for inclusive classroom practices and pedagogies recognising the importance of the individual contexts in which a child or young person is learning. You will also consider the role of standard and specialist assessment in the classroom.
The module provides the theoretical foundations on which to develop specialist practice in the classroom and support transition across stages of a child’s educational journey.
The module is delivered through a blended learning approach comprising a day school, online readings and activities and is supported by three tutorials across the semester. Activities will include reflecting on your daily practice and working in groups to explore understanding and to share experiences.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you will develop an in-depth understanding of:
