Module summary

This module will provide research methods training in the area of digital education. It will prepare you to be able to carry out a research project in the area of digital education from planning the project to finalising the project paper or report. The aim is two-fold: to prepare learners on the MA Digital Education for their dissertation; and to prepare learners to be able to carry out research in their professional settings.

Objectives

In this module you will develop research skills which enable them to design and execute an empirical digital education research study. It will focus on the importance of data in digital education and professional learning settings, the theoretical, ethical and practical implications of carrying out a research study, as well as how to evaluate existing research studies, analyse data and present findings.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

By the end of the module you should be able to:
1. Discuss the underlying principles of education research design
2. Critically analyse the components of a high quality research paper and how they relate to each other
3. Consider the ethical issues involved in working with human participants in a research study

Skills Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. critically reflect on and evaluate components of educational research
2. articulate a well-structured and coherent argument in written form.
3. search for, evaluate and use pertinent information sources to support your arguments and draw informed conclusions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each participant will be expected to make an active contribution within the asynchronous and synchronous elements which will be monitored and feedback given. Each student will have two tutorials to discuss progress. There will be opportunities for formative feedback on work in progress from peers as well as the module teaching team.
