Module summary
There is a global trend towards inclusive education for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This module provides you with an opportunity to examine inclusive approaches to education in a range of different teaching and learning contexts. It will introduce you to principles, policies, research and practices linked to inclusive education for all learners including those with SEND.Objectives
The module objectives are to:-- Provide an overview of international, national and local issues and debates in inclusive and special education.
- Consider the types of SEND experienced by learners in different educational contexts.
- Examine the principles of an inclusive framework for provision to meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Explore inclusive approaches to assessment, planning, decision making and review in education.
- Consider approaches to promoting partnership and the participation of learners, caregivers and professionals in education.
- Critically examine the links between principles of inclusion, research evidence, policy, legislation and practice.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically discuss the principles of inclusion.
2. Appraise research evidence, policy, legislation and practice relevant to learners with SEND in a range of education contexts.
3. Evaluate local, national and global dimensions of inclusive education.
Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Academic skills - The ability to write in a clear, concise, focused and structured manner that is supported by relevant evidence.
2. Academic skills - Critical thinking - The ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas.
3. Sustainability skills - Systems thinking - Recognises and understands relationships; analyses complex systems (environmental, economic and social systems and interdependencies across these); considers how systems are embedded within different domains and scales; deals with uncertainty; uses analytical thinking

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There are three scheduled formative tasks for which peer and tutor feedback is provided (a written summary of a topic, a critical review and a group presentation). Tutorial time can be used to review module content or for assignment support.Methods of assessment
