Module summary
This course has been developed for students, professionals and other parties who are interested in, and may wish to work with children showing developmental disorders. This module specifically examines the two developmental disorders of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Both conditions are constantly in the news from educational, medical and parenting perspectives with controversies surrounding both of them. Each condition is taken and described with respect to definitions, characteristics leading to assessment, diagnosis and intervention. In both disorders lifelong progression is examined from the early years to emerging adulthood and controversies that surround the two conditions are examined and analysed in detail. The course is taught on a part time basis in the evening. There is a partner module of EDUC 5811.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- Identify and show understanding of the characteristics of the two developmental disorders of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Autistic Spectrum Disorder ASD.
- Evaluate and analyse critically approaches to assessment, identification and management of ADD and ASD.
- Demonstrate understanding of support systems for children with ADD and ASD.
- Develop a model for practice that can be incorporated into the context of their working environment.
Syllabus
Children with developmental disorders include those with specific difficulties in the areas of attention, language, literacy, social skills and motor coordination. In this module the two specific disorders of attention deficit disorder (ADD) and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD)are examined. They are defined for educational and clinical purposes by the World health Organisation ICD-10 and the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV R. Attention deficit disorder involves children who have difficulties with attention occurring with or without accompanying hyperactivity, while autistic spectrum disorder includes children with autism or Asperger's Syndrome and involves difficulties with language, social interaction, imagination and thinking. This module describes and analyses these two disorders focusing on definitions, assessment, diagnosis, comorbidity, intervention and controversies.
