Module summary

This module will introduce you to theories of and approaches to teaching the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in TESOL contexts. You will consider different ways English language teachers in a variety of contexts teach these skills and the rationales for this related to second language learning. You will criticaly examine and discuss current research in English language teaching methodology. You will also be encouraged to draw on your own experiences as a teacher of TESOL to critically evaluate theories and aproaches to teaching the four skills.

Objectives

The overall aims of this module are to help you to:

* understand and analyse approaches to learning languages;
* describe and analyse approaches to the teaching of English language skills to English speakers of other languages;
* discuss and assess the principles underlying procedures for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing, with particular reference to language focus and language development;

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and understanding of the approaches to teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing in TESOL

2. Critically appraise different theories and approaches to teaching English language methodology

3. Show critical awareness of how to apply new learning of approaches and principles to classroom activities and procedures in your own context

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Critically consider theories, approaches and techniques of English language teaching methodology

2. Communicate complex TESOL concepts and approaches to diverse audiences in educational settings

3. Reflect upon your own professional needs in TESOL and context, and plan for future development
