Module summary

This module looks at the use of corpora in the teaching of English language. It will show you what kinds of corpora are available and how to use them to identify what language specific groups of learners need to learn. It involves hands-on use of corpora with analysis of corpus data and ELT corpus-based materials. The module will also help you understand the ways in which you can use the results of this analysis in the classroom and how learners can be helped to use this kind of software in their own learning.

Objectives

The module aims to enable students to:



- understand the principles of building and using corpora, especially with regard to English language teaching;

- be able to use a range of the most widely used corpus tools with confidence and accuracy;

- be able to interpret and discuss their own findings from using these tools;

- be able to apply corpus techniques and findings to suggest and evaluate solutions to TESOL issues.

The learning activities to support students to achieve these objectives are:

- presentation of theoretical concepts in corpus linguistics, and corpus techniques in online pre-recorded lectures;

- selected readings prior to the weekly in-person seminars;

- short tasks to be completed prior to the weekly in-person seminars;

- discussion of tasks and further corpus tasks conducted individually and in groups during in-person seminars.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should:

1. Demonstrate a broad and current knowledge of the available corpora and tool, with hands-on experience in the use and exploration of corpora for English language teaching and learning

2. Critically design and evaluate corpus-informed materials;

3. Critically discuss current issues and debates around using corpora in the English language classroom.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1. Digital proficiency: ability to use and critically compare and evaluate different corpus linguistics software packages

2. Analysis: ability to generate and interpret accurately and creatively output from corpus linguistic programmes

3. Creativity: critique, adapt, develop and create learning resources
