Module summary
This module will help you evaluate, select and adapt TESOL textbooks to suit your learners and context and help you design your own materials for teaching new language, and reading, listening, speaking and writing skills. We will discuss a range of issues to do with materials design, such as the role of authentic materials. This is a practically-oriented module with an emphasis on creativity.Objectives
On completion of this module, you should be able to:- understand the centrality and underpinning principles of task and material design, selection, adaptation and evaluation to TESOL pedagogy
- have an awareness of the linguistic, educational and socio-cultural values implicit in TESOL tasks and materials
- Differentiate the structures of TESOL tasks
- Design tasks and materials for TESOL
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. explain the underpinning principles of task design, adaptation, and evaluation to TESOL pedagogy.
2. appraise the linguistic, educational and socio-cultural values implicit in TESOL tasks and materials.
3. Create TESOL tasks and materials for a specific language teaching and learning context.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Create creative and innovative TESOL tasks and materials which have been informed by relevant theoretical and contextual principles.
2. Propose resources, negotiate and agree on relevant TESOL materials to be adapted or adopted by a TESOL community.
3. Critically assess TESOL tasks and materials in collaboration with a TESOL community that are responsive to its specific sociocultural and educational needs.
