Objectives
By the end of this module students should: be aware of and able to describe the differences and relationship between ESOL teaching and teacher education for TESOL; be able to describe and discuss different ways of conceptualising the goals of TESOL teacher education; be able to discuss different aspects of the process of TESOL teacher learning; be able to relate discussions of goals and processes of TESOL teacher learning to planning for contextually appropriate teacher education.Syllabus
The module has two main topic strands: goals of teacher education and processes of teacher education. Sub-topics under 'goals' include: the good teacher, good teaching, the professional teacher, the reflective practitioner, 'the whole iceberg', what teachers need to know'. Sub topics under 'processes' include: training/development/education, skill-learning, 'interteaching', implicit learning, mentoring. Other possible topics, covered in more or less depth, depending on the interests and needs of the group are: pre-service programme frameworks, session design issues, INSET issues, formal and informal teacher development, trainer development, the self-directed teacher.
