This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

This module covers fundamentals of power system modelling, analysis and operation. Students gain an understanding of the various layers and components in modern power networks and how power systems are operated. The module also provides an opportunity to learn relevant programming tools (DIgSILENT PowerFactory) to model, design and analyse power systems.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Explain the operation and functional models of the main components in a power system.
2. Use phasor representations to analyse complex AC power systems and perform calculations to determine real, reactive and apparent power.
3. Apply mathematical and computational methods to solve the load flow calculations for power systems.
4. Describe the principles of planning and operation of power systems.
5. Discuss, through case studies, the technical challenges in both the design and the operation of power systems, and the future trends in power systems and smart grids.

Syllabus

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Power system concepts: single- and three-phase systems, phasor representation in sinusoidal steady-state, real and reactive power, per unit system
Fundamentals and modelling of power system components: generators, loads, transformers, transmission lines, efficiency and power loss
Power flow analysis: admittance matrix, power flow equations, Newton-Raphson method
Fundamentals of power system operation and smart grid technologies

Private study

Students are expected to use private study time to consolidate their understanding of course materials, to undertake preparatory work for seminars, workshops, tutorials, examples classes and practical classes, and also to prepare for in-course and summative assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students studying ELEC modules will receive formative feedback in a variety of ways, including the use of self-test quizzes on Minerva, practice questions/worked examples and (where appropriate) through verbal interaction with teaching staff and/or post-graduate demonstrators.
