Module summary

This module provides an understanding of digital audio and video compression and distribution principles. Students delve into the specifics of digital television, focusing on the DVB-T system. Through comprehensive learning, students will gain proficiency in the principles underlying the compression and distribution of digital audio and video, as well as the intricacies of the DVB-T system within the digital television domain.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able:
- To explain the engineering principles for compression of digital audio, images and video.
- To describe, and quantitatively analyse, a range of compression formats for digital audio, images and video.
- To explain the principles of digital television, in particular the DVB-T system.
- To describe, and quantitatively analyse, the principles of modulation and error correction applied to the DVB-T system.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:
1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles to the solution of complex digital media problems. Some of the knowledge will be at the forefront of digital media.
2. Analyse complex digital media problems to reach substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:
a) Application of science, mathematics and/or engineering principles
b) Problem analysis
