Pre-requisite qualifications

- Prior learning to Level 6 (undergraduate degree or equivalent)

- Either: a post graduate teaching qualification (Diploma; Post Graduate Certificate; Masters) and/or minimum 2 years fulltime or cumulative experience of teaching in higher education or teaching English for Specific Purposes.

- Minimum English language expertise at 7 overall in IELTS with a minimum of 7 in all components; C1 CEFR

Module summary

EAP work and language education often requires practitioners and lecturers to work with diverse staff and students, and potentially within unfamiliar disciplines. This module will offer the opportunity to engage with theories and debates in the field of intercultural communication applicable to your own teaching and learning contexts, allowing you to reflect on and critically analyse relevant educational settings, using a range of practical examples, policy documents, syllabi, education materials and scenarios.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to explore the relationship between language, culture and the teaching of English for Academic Purposes or language in various academic contexts. Its aims are to introduce interculturality and intercultural communication and related concepts to the context of higher education or relevant educational contexts and in particular (academic) language classrooms.

Teaching methods will include shared online discussions around weekly topics, written or spoken analyses of authentic scenarios and documentation and ongoing reflection. Students will be expected to read widely in order to inform your analyses and deepen your reflections on your own practice or context. Learning activities may include viewing recorded lectures, listening to online publicly available online or digital content (e.g., TED talks or YouTube videos), analysing and commenting on documents or authentic texts (e.g., classroom transcripts) or scenarios and then having synchronous or asynchronous discussions with peers to compare interpretations. Students may be asked to undertake short analytical commentaries and tasks which offer practice in applying or considering different theoretical perspectives in relation to pedagogic practices.

Learning outcomes
A student who takes this module will be able to

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the concepts of language, culture, power and identity in higher education or in relevant EAP or language learning contexts

2. Apply knowledge of the potential role of intercultural communication in relevant language / EAP contexts (through pedagogy or syllabus design)

3. Elucidate and critique notions of academic cultures, disciplinary cultures and institutional cultures

4. Selectively apply conceptualisations of interculturality to language syllabi and / or language pedagogies and practices

Syllabus

The syllabus will include the possibility of exploring a range of key thematic areas, including:

1. Concepts of culture, identity, language and power and their interrelationship

2. Defining and critiquing academic cultures and disciplinary cultures

3. Political economy of languages in education and relationship to institutional discourses

4. Intercultural rhetoric approaches to EAP / language teaching

5. Researching and exploring intercultural communication in EAP / language education contexts

6. Ethical considerations in IC

7. Applications of intercultural communication to pedagogies and curricula and / or syllabus

8. Wider applications of intercultural communication in education

The module will be assessed by means of one extended piece of work which could be written or a visual recorded presentation. Choice is offered so that students can choose what might be of most interest to them, particularly in relation to their own professional contexts (either actual or imagined).
