Module summary

This module provides an exciting introduction to the study of the structure of the English language from the smallest element of sound, through syntax and style, to the analysis of different genres or text types, including, for example, newspaper articles, advertising, poetry, narrative, speeches, and courtroom discourse. Students are introduced to a wide range of ways of approaching the description, analysis, and interpretation of texts, including use of the IPA, quantitative, qualitative, and computational approaches, and transcripts of speeches.

Objectives

This module provides students with a strong foundation in the structure, style and genres of the English language, its texts and its study at university level. Its main objective is to enable students to develop an understanding of the structure and style of English across a variety of text types or genres, through the analysis of a wide range of texts. Students will demonstrate a practical understanding of how the English language works in literature and other forms of writing.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. communicate effectively through oral and written means to analyse the structure and style of English texts
2. use appropriate descriptive terminology
3. critically analyse a range of literary and non-literary text types/genres

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. use research and subject-specific IT skills to retrieve information, organise material and evaluate its importance, and produce their work
2. participate individually and in groups in seminars, in a group presentation, and written work
3. efficiently manage time, use organisational skills and develop independent and collaborative learning skills.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Group presentation which prepares students for the essay and which is given peer and tutor feedback. Practice grammar test which prepares students for the assessed online grammar tests. Also by participating in seminars and lecture workshops.
