Module summary
This module introduces the fascinating breadth and diversity to be found within the English language. It offers insights into different geographic, historical, social and stylistic variations – where they come from, their characteristics, how and why they are used. The module is founded on the individual expertise of colleagues in English language and builds on the tradition of excellence at Leeds.Objectives
This is an introductory module which provides students with a strong foundation in looking at variation and varieties of English. Its main objective is to enable students to develop an understanding of key concepts used in the study of the English language. It will challenge students to apply their growing understanding of language study to real-world situations, contexts, and varieties of English. In doing so, students will develop their practical and theoretical understanding of language in the world.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. identify aspects of the history of English
2. describe and analyse language variation
3. describe and analyse language issues in the world.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. developed research skills, including the retrieval of information, the organisation of material and the evaluation of its importance
5. developed a capacity for independent thought, critical reasoning and judgement
6. efficient time and information management, organisational skills, independent and collaborative learning skills
